Deck railings and cable rail in Fort Collins

Guards that keep the view of the foothills open and meet Fort Collins spacing rules, on new decks or as a replacement.

Deck railings in Fort Collins do two jobs: they stop falls and they frame the view. Homeowners from west Fort Collins to Timnath can get connected with a contractor who installs cable, aluminum, steel or wood railings on new decks or replaces loose, outdated guards on existing ones.

What does the code ask for?

The City of Fort Collins deck guide spells out the numbers inspectors check:

  • A guard is required where the deck is 30 inches or more above grade, measured 3 feet out from the deck edge.
  • Openings must be less than 4 inches on the deck and less than 4⅜ inches on stairs.
  • Cable railing needs a maximum 3-inch spacing and posts no more than 4 feet on center.
  • Stairs with 4 or more risers need a handrail on at least one side.
  • Replacing a guard rail requires a permit in the city.

Signs a railing needs work

  • Posts move more than slightly when you lean on the top rail
  • Balusters are loose or gaps are wide enough for a child's head
  • Bolts at the post base are rusted or pulled through
  • Stair handrails are missing, loose or hard to grip

Why rails loosen here

Dry air shrinks wood posts and rims, which loosens the bolts that hold a guard post. Freeze-thaw and snow shoveled against balusters add more stress each winter. Many older decks used notched 4x4 posts fastened with a couple of lag screws, which isn't how guard posts are blocked and bolted today.

What affects the price?

  • Linear feet of guard and the number of stair runs
  • System type, finish and post spacing
  • Whether the deck rim needs blocking to anchor new posts
  • Permit for replacement guards
